Marathon’s game director Joe Ziegler has announced that he is leaving Bungie. His departure comes about a month after Bungie carried out mass layoffs following the final major update for Destiny 2, and as Marathon prepares for a mid-season update. Ziegler says Del Chafe III will take over as game director, moving from his prior role as assistant game director. GameSpot reports that Chafe III will work alongside creative director Julia Nardin to “guide the game forward,” and Ziegler indicates he is heading to a new opportunity that he plans to announce later.

Both outlets describe the change as another leadership transition for Marathon, following a earlier game director removal in the project’s history. Christopher Barrett previously served as game director but was dismissed amid misconduct allegations; he later reached a settlement with Bungie and Sony, according to GameSpot.

Ziegler’s note emphasizes gratitude to the Marathon team and players and says development will continue under the new leadership.
