Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri announces a review of pension payments for retired civil servants, setting a new minimum monthly pension of N50,000. The government says the change is intended to address long-standing complaints that the lowest pension payments were far too small and had remained largely unchanged for decades. Reports state that prior to the review, some of the least-paid pensioners received as little as N4,000 per month for more than 20 years.
Fintiri makes the announcement on Friday during a live appearance on the Hausa programme “Taba Kidi Taba Karatu” on Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Yola. He describes the earlier minimum as an injustice and says the adjustment reflects appreciation for the years of service rendered by pensioners. The announcement is also presented as part of broader efforts to improve welfare for both serving and retired workers in the state.
While one report notes that the state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Mohammed Sali, was not reached for comment at the time of publication, the outlets agree on the key point that the state moves from N4,000 to N50,000 as the new minimum.
