The Supreme Court agrees to hear a petition by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) challenging bail granted to accused Anup Majee in the West Bengal coal scam case. The ED, represented by Additional Solicitor General S. V. Raju, seeks cancellation of the anticipatory bail, arguing that Majee has been absconding and that the alleged offences involve large-scale wrongdoing related to national resources. The ED’s case also relies on the status of Majee’s accountant, who it says is still absconding, and on allegations that money was paid to facilitate the accused’s position.
The Supreme Court issues a notice as it considers the ED’s plea, with reports indicating the court takes note of the ED’s ongoing and prolonged investigation. Majee, named as a key accused, maintains that he has cooperated with the investigation. He is accused in connection with a Rs 2,700 crore scam, according to reports. The matter is set for further hearing, where the court will consider the ED’s grounds for cancellation versus the defence’s submissions supporting bail.
