Climate and education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk is taken from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi after about 20–21 days of an indefinite hunger strike. Multiple reports say his health deteriorates as the fast continues, with police citing expert medical advice for the transfer. Delhi Police state the shift is carried out in compliance with orders from the Delhi High Court and is intended to provide “essential medical care.”
Authorities also request protesters at Jantar Mantar to vacate the site peacefully, saying police exercise restraint during the process. Some activists accuse Delhi Police of “kidnapping” him, while other outlets report authorities describe the move as necessary medical intervention. His wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, says she has been alerted to the hospitalisation and publicly asks doctors not to administer any oral or intravenous treatment without consent from her, his family, and his medical team.
Wangchuk’s hunger strike is linked to demands for examination reforms connected to allegations of irregularities, including the NEET controversy, and he was reportedly due to participate in further protest activity.
