The Commission on Elections (Comelec) says 27 election areas in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) are classified under its “red” category ahead of the region’s first parliamentary elections on September 14. Both reports describe the “red” category as covering areas with serious threats and a history of election-related violence. Comelec’s list of areas of concern for the BARMM elections is as of July 15. The areas are distributed across multiple provinces within BARMM: 21 areas come from Lanao del Sur, three from Maguindanao del Sur, and one area each from Basilan, Maguindanao del Sur, and Special Geographic Area. The reports indicate that this classification is intended to guide election preparedness and security measures for the upcoming vote.
