A woman from Hyderabad, Shabnam Begum, alleges she is being forced to work without pay after being sent to Oman for a housemaid job. Multiple reports say she traveled to Muscat on March 26 after a local recruitment agent promised employment as a domestic worker, reportedly with a monthly wage. Instead of the job terms she expected, Begum claims she worked 12 to 15 hours a day, including day and night, for multiple households while receiving no salary for several months. She also alleges restrictions on her movement and communication, including being kept without a mobile phone for nearly 1.5 months, and she reports physical abuse, along with inadequate food and accommodation.

After escaping from her employer’s residence, Begum reached the Indian Embassy in Muscat. Reports also state she claims her passport was taken by recruitment agents, complicating her ability to return home. The Indian Embassy has acknowledged the matter and is investigating, while officials work to ensure her safety and arrange repatriation. The allegations are based on Begum’s account and statements shared in appeals and videos.
