Tripura’s Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar is found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday, according to multiple reports. The Hindu and other outlets say the 1994-batch IPS officer was taken to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital after being found at his office, where doctors declared him brought dead. Several reports, including Mint, Economic Times, and Free Press Journal, describe the death as suspected to be suicide, but they also note that authorities have not officially confirmed the cause. Times of India adds further details, reporting that Dhankar was found in an office toilet and that a magisterial probe has been ordered into the circumstances. It also says investigators are examining possible factors, including whether a suicide note exists.
After Dhankar’s death, Additional DGP Goduguluri Srinivasa Rao is appointed as the acting police chief, and the government declares a day of state mourning, as reported by Times of India. Dhankar had taken charge as Tripura Police DGP in May 2025, according to reporting in the articles.
