Cross River State announces exemptions for categories of drivers from certain transport-related payments. The Cross River Transport Regulatory Agency (CTRA) says women involved in commercial driving are exempt from vehicle registration fees and daily operational levies. It also says men aged 60 and above who own their vehicles and drive commercially are similarly exempt. CTRA Chairman Chief Oliver Orok makes the disclosure during meetings with drivers’ unions in Calabar and the southern senatorial district. According to the agency, the policy aligns with Governor Bassey Otu’s “People First” agenda and a programme described as “Season of Sweetness” aimed at easing costs for transport operators. The government also mentions other measures that accompany the exemptions, including reduced ticket prices, suspension of enforcement of some road offences, and continuation of free transport services during festive periods. It further states it will begin special enforcement on August 1 with support from security agencies to ensure compliance and revenue protection. Additional actions include efforts to help register drivers for voter cards via INEC and plans for more registration points along major routes.
