The Supreme Court on Monday seeks Uttar Pradesh’s response on whether an SIT can be entrusted to investigate an alleged embezzlement of Ram temple donations in Ayodhya. A bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, asked the Solicitor General, appearing for the UP government, to take instructions on the feasibility of assigning the case to a Special Investigation Team rather than local police.
The court frames the request in the context of an earlier process in which an SIT had examined the matter before the FIR was registered. The bench also issues a caution to litigants not to politicise the issue, emphasizing that the court’s role is to ensure a proper investigation. The bench’s direction is to provide the state’s position on whether the SIT that previously reviewed the entire issue can be tasked with the formal probe moving forward.
The Supreme Court’s interaction occurs alongside the state’s submission of a status report in compliance with an earlier order, as noted in the proceedings.
