Nigeria’s Federal Government launches a mobile learning initiative aimed at improving teachers’ professional development, with a particular focus on female educators. The programme is introduced in partnership with UNESCO and is unveiled on Monday, July 20, 2026, in Abuja, alongside the start of a three-day Master Training Programme. The initiative is designed to provide teachers and school leaders with mobile learning tools and resources to support education quality across Nigeria and in four other African countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, and South Sudan.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the training is intended to address barriers that often limit teacher development, including inadequate infrastructure, geographic constraints, and time pressures. It emphasizes mobile learning approaches that can work with low data and offline-friendly access, enabling educators to retrieve materials at any time and place.
The initiative is funded by the Government of Japan and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen continuous professional development through flexible, technology-driven methods. The training programme runs from July 21 to 23, 2026 and is themed around empowering female teachers and school leaders through integration of mobile-based learning within the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) framework.
