National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is working on enabling Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions without internet connectivity on both the customer smartphone and the merchant point-of-sale (PoS) terminal. Multiple reports say NPCI will begin certifying PoS terminals later this year or in 2026, with the rollout aimed at improving digital payment access in areas with weak or no network coverage, including remote locations and other settings where online connectivity may be limited.
The planned capability is described as using near-field communication (NFC). Customers would be able to make offline payments by tapping an NFC-enabled smartphone on a certified PoS terminal. The initial per-transaction limit is expected to be ₹2,000. Some reporting adds that users would first add funds to their on-device UPI Lite wallet while connected to the internet, and then use that available balance for offline payments without entering a UPI PIN at the time of payment.
PoS terminal manufacturers would require NPCI certification before enabling the offline function. The proposed system involves temporarily storing payment authorization details and transmitting them for verification once connectivity is restored. The feature builds on earlier NPCI efforts for offline payments through UPI Lite X.
