Lawyers representing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), threaten legal action over remarks made on a television programme. In a press statement, Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, says the legal team is responding to comments allegedly made by television guest Chigozie Nnabugwu on News Central Television. The lawyers say Nnabugwu urged the Federal Government to kill Kanu “for normalcy to return” to Nigeria’s Southeast. They describe the remark as unlawful and as a dangerous call for extrajudicial killing that could threaten Kanu’s life, incite violence, and disrupt public order.
The statement says a video of the remarks was published on News Central Television’s verified X handle on July 19 and later went viral. The lawyers also argue the comments may attract offences under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act, which criminalises transmissions that threaten life or could cause breakdown of law and order. They add that liability could extend under the Criminal Code for incitement to violence, and they argue broadcasting such calls while Kanu’s case remains before the court could amount to contempt of court. The legal team says it is reviewing legal options and demands a public retraction and a televised apology, warning the statement is a pre-action notice.
