Dennis Amachree, a former assistant director of the Department of State Services (DSS), says Nigeria’s former military ruler General Sani Abacha died of cardiac arrest during sexual intercourse. All three accounts frame Abacha’s death as a period that has attracted controversy and conspiracy theories, and Amachree’s account is presented as an attempt to clarify what happened.
Amachree, who says he was assistant director of operations and intelligence at the Lagos DSS command when Abacha died, describes the incident as occurring at the Presidential Villa in Abuja in the early hours of June 1998. He says a woman was present during an intimate encounter and that she left the scene shortly afterward. In the version reported, Abacha’s girlfriend had arrived earlier at Aso Rock with her younger sister, who had been in Abuja for a conference.
Amachree’s narrative states that at about 4:05am, the younger sister realized Abacha was unresponsive and checked his pulse, which showed no heartbeat. He adds that the woman immediately returned to a hotel, then traveled to Lagos on a morning flight. The reports also say DSS/SSS involvement followed, and that Amachree interrogated the woman in Lagos after a call from DSS headquarters.
