Colleges and universities across India are set to come together to create “Campus Biodiversity Registers,” a nationwide effort to document biodiversity within higher education campuses. The exercise focuses on recording the flora and fauna found within the premises of institutions of higher learning. According to The Hindu, the initiative is anchored by the Nature Conservation Foundation and the National Biodiversity Authority, which are coordinating the framework and approach for campuses to systematically catalogue local species.
The planned registers are intended to provide an organised record of biodiversity at the institutional level, supporting awareness and future conservation-related planning. By involving colleges and universities across the country, the initiative aims to generate comparable information from different regions, helping to highlight how campus ecosystems vary and what species they host.
The announcement is presented as a nationwide exercise rather than a single-site project, with higher education institutions participating in the documentation process that will ultimately feed into a broader national understanding of campus biodiversity.
