A boat accident in the Republic of Cameroon results in at least 20 deaths, including 18 Nigerians, according to multiple reports. The boat is said to be travelling from Garoua (also reported as Garwa) in Cameroon to Yola in Nigeria, with passengers bound for a community in Adamawa State. Late Monday night, the vessel encounters a violent storm and capsizes around midnight, leading to the deaths.
Accounts describe the boat as carrying more than 50 passengers and being heavily loaded with iron rods and other building materials intended for Dasin, a village in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Initial estimates cited higher casualty figures, but local authorities confirm that about 20 people have died so far.
The reports add that the 18 Nigerians identified among the dead are buried in Wuro Bokki community in Fufore LGA. Search and rescue operations continue for passengers who are still unaccounted for, with divers from both Cameroon and Nigeria involved, while survivors receive treatment in hospitals in nearby border communities.
