The devices, also described as “robot wolves,” feature flashing red LED eyes and an appearance intended to resemble a threatening animal. They emit sounds such as howls and growls to scare bears away from areas near homes and public spaces.
Coverage ties the surge in demand to worsening bear encounters, including increased bear sightings and attacks in Japan. Several reports say the robots are produced slowly because they are not mass-produced; the manufacturer makes them by hand and cannot assemble them quickly enough to meet orders. At least one source states customers are being asked to wait several months.
The robots are also described as including sensors and, in some versions, solar panels and battery power. Reported pricing is around $4,000 per unit. While farmers are cited as the main customers, other buyers mentioned include organizations and facilities such as golf courses, with plans discussed for future upgrades and additional product formats.
