Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. (MSEDCL) is moving forward with plans for an initial public offering and has engaged investment banks to advise on the issue. Economic Times reports that MSEDCL has appointed eight investment bankers for the proposed IPO, which it says could raise between ₹8,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore. Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, says MSEDCL has shortlisted six investment banks for a planned offering that could raise between $500 million and $1 billion. The proposed listing is expected to involve Mahavitaran, the brand under which MSEDCL operates. The IPO is described as the first-ever IPO by the Maharashtra government and a state-run power distribution company. Both reports frame the fundraising as material but indicate it is still in the planning stage, with bank selection taking place ahead of the IPO. The company distributes electricity to a large share of consumers in Maharashtra, which is among India’s largest and wealthiest subnational economies.
