Android 17 introduces an upgraded, built-in migration experience that makes it easier to switch from an iPhone to an Android device by transferring more data wirelessly. Google says the new process can move Google Accounts, passwords, Wi‑Fi credentials, and eSIMs, while also supporting media and personal information such as photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendars. As described across outlets, the transfer requires an iPhone running iOS 26.3 or later.
The new migration tools are presented as part of broader interoperability changes tied to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. The regulation requires services to offer data portability to reduce operating-system lock-in, and it also affects how eSIM transfers work. To comply, both Apple and Google implement transfer options that operate without requiring a separate app, in addition to offering earlier app-based tools.
Google is rolling out Android 17 with the updated data transfer method starting on selected Pixel devices, with plans to expand to newly announced Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 models.
