In the King’s Speech, King Charles presents the government’s legislative agenda for the coming year, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer outlining a package of bills covering health, education and the courts. The programme includes proposals to abolish NHS England, alongside plans to overhaul arrangements for special educational needs (SEND) provision. In the justice system, the speech sets out measures to limit trials by jury and to introduce digital identification. It also includes proposals to end the leasehold system in England and Wales.
The agenda also contains economic and industrial elements. These include nationalisation of British Steel, as well as pilot schemes intended to support innovation, including in defence technology and AI-related applications such as AI-controlled ships. The speech further references efforts to strengthen economic and policy alignment with the EU.
Taken together, the proposals are presented as long-promised reforms and part of Starmer’s legislative priorities for the next parliamentary session.
