The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) establishes “Task Force Cash Cow” to look into alleged anomalies in the Philippines’ hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. NBI Director Melvin Matibag says the task force will investigate the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc), including issues linked to the alleged irregular use of government funds for the event.
According to reports, the probe focuses on Phisgoc’s reported government funding of about P6.7 billion and examines concerns related to preparations for the Games, including venues associated with the 2019 SEA Games. The formation of the unit is described as part of the NBI’s broader work into alleged funding irregularities connected to infrastructure built for the Games, including a sports complex in New Clark City, Tarlac.
Matibag says the task force includes personnel from the NBI’s Public Corruption Division, Special Action Unit, the Office of the Director, and the bureau’s field officers. The NBI indicates it is conducting an initial review before further steps in its investigation.
