New Resident Evil Movie Trailer Reveals Original Story From Zach Cregger

The new Resident Evil movie from Weapons director Zach Cregger is almost here, and in a new trailer, it looks like this film will have plenty of Easter eggs for eagle-eyed fans to spot. Cregger--who is a huge fan of the Capcom survival-horror series--has previously spoken about how his film is an original story that takes place during the infamous Raccoon City Incident, one that follows a completely new character on his journey to survive a terrible night in the metropolis after it falls victim to the Umbrella Corporation's bioweapons. The trailer starts off with star Austin Abrams--who plays the "idiot" courier Bryan--finishing up an organ delivery at a local hospital, and if you look closely at the bag he's given for his trip to Raccoon City, it looks very similar to the first aid kit seen in the Resident Evil remake. That's what we call foreshadowing! Something else that pops up several times in the trailer is a blend of red and white colors, like this scene here where Bryan hits one of the recently infected Raccoon City residents. It's a great visual motif, and it's a great reference to the Umbrella Corporation, which uses those colors in its sinister logo: You can spot the theme again when Bryan hits the brake pedal, as his shoe features red laces on white leather: A good ol' boomstick! Shotguns have always been a popular choice of weapon in Resident Evil games, and this model looks very similar to the M21 shotgun found in Resident Evil 7: Scavenging for ammo is probably the most Resident Evil action there is, and Bryan is doing the franchise proud as he pokes around for shells: Don't forget to save! Resident Evil fans channeled the spirit of Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at his TV for this scene, as the classic typewriter made a quick appearance. In most Resident Evil games, typewriters serve as manual save-points, and when playing the game on a harder difficulty, you'll have to scavenge for ink ribbons as you only have a limited number of saves: Another nod to the past, the box of shotgun shells seen here has the Heavy Field Buckshot logo. The brand was previously seen in Resident Evil 4 and 5. The rest of the trailer kicks into overdrive, as we're shown the seemingly deserted streets of Raccoon City: Infected civilians with the survival instincts of lemmings are yeeting themselves off of rooftops to get to Bryan: Paul Walter Hauser's character of Carl, who drops a few cryptic lines: I already know that babies are monsters, but this glimpse at one with an unnervingly long arm is already creeping me out: And this scene also looks like it took place during a bloodbath: Oh, past-Bryan, if only you knew what lies in store for future-Bryan: You won't have to wait too much longer to see it, as Resident Evil hits theaters on September 18. Cregger reportedly had "carte blanche" to do whatever he wanted, and the director has said that he wants audiences to feel trapped by all the chaos erupting in the movie during its short-and-sweet95 minute runtime. It's not the only movie based on a Capcom IP coming out this year, as it'll be followed by Street Fighter on October 16.

That's not going to happen, though, and Cregger thinks fans of the game will be happy with what he creates. "When you watch it, you'll be like, 'This is very Zach.' It's just [that] it takes place in the Resident Evil world. I don't think fans of the games are gonna be bummed," he told Entertainment Weekly. The Resident Evil movie comes to theaters on September 18. It stars Abrams as an "idiot" medical courier named Bryan who gets mixed up in a horrifying adventure that Cregger says is akin to The Lord of the Rings. “Not that he’s stupid, but he’s not your typical game character, with no combat skills whatsoever and completely inept at survival. Bryan is very much an everyman who happens to be burdened with this kind of sacred mission that’s going to take him into the heart of everything. It’s kind of like Frodo going into Mordor," he said.
