Liberian authorities seize a large shipment of cocaine believed to be destined for Europe, in one of the biggest drug busts recorded in the West African country. A senior police official says officers find 3,971 kilograms of cocaine in Duazon, east of Monrovia. The seizure is estimated at roughly $317 million (about €277 million) in value. Police arrest two suspects, including one reportedly holding passports from Spain and Colombia, and another carrying a Serbian passport. Photographs and video released by the police show a house filled with boxes and suitcases wrapped in cling film and marked with names including “Coco” and “Poseidon.” Investigators say it is not yet clear where the drugs come from, and that chemical analysis is needed to identify the country of origin and confirm details from the markings. The cases reflect a wider pattern in which traffickers use West African transit routes to move cocaine from South America toward European markets. The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime describes the region as a key transit hub for cocaine shipments. The police official notes that the drugs’ full provenance and trafficking network links are still being investigated.
