Nearly 200 Silicon Valley companies, including Y Combinator and Proton, have sent letters to the Trump administration urging it not to block U.S. access to Chinese open-weight AI models. The appeal, first reported by Politico and echoed by outlets including The Next Web and Times of India, comes from a newly formed group sometimes described as the Little Tech Association. The companies argue that restricting downloads of open-weight models—where model weights are publicly available—would harm the next generation of American startups rather than stop the models’ spread.
The letters are directed at senior officials including President Donald Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and also reference other administration offices. The startups say the administration’s approach should focus on targeted safeguards instead of broad restrictions. They warn that an outright ban would effectively shift business opportunities toward companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI, while many smaller firms could struggle to compete or continue operating.
The reporting also links the effort to escalations described as involving distillation and sanctions threats related to Chinese AI developers, with Chinese model releases such as Moonshot AI’s cited as part of the broader debate.
