Microsoft is running a limited public test of a free, ad-supported tier for Xbox Cloud Gaming. The program is available to a subset of Xbox Insider members and is designed to let players stream games without paying a subscription. In the test, ads play before users enter a cloud gaming session. Microsoft says the ads do not interrupt gameplay once the session starts. Session length is limited to about one hour during the early trial.
Microsoft frames the ad-supported approach as a way to improve affordability and access, particularly as newer games and hardware costs rise. The company previously trialed the concept internally with Microsoft employees before expanding it to another round of tests.
The test focuses on games people already own, with streaming powered by Xbox Cloud Gaming. While Xbox Cloud Gaming currently includes hundreds of playable titles, streaming generally requires Game Pass; the ad tier is intended to allow access to select games even without a Game Pass membership.
Microsoft also outlines principles for future ads, including prioritizing the player, not interrupting gameplay flow, maintaining content-quality standards, and clearly identifying advertising.
