Reports from Africa and the Middle East describe increasing camel deaths linked to extreme heat as desert temperatures regularly exceed 50°C. While camels are well adapted to arid conditions, experts say their ability to cope is not unlimited. They can tolerate heat better than many other animals because of features such as thick coats and body temperature regulation, and they conserve water by sweating very little. However, when temperatures rise above their comfort range, camels can suffer heat stress, including dehydration and exhaustion, and become more vulnerable to illness.
Herders interviewed in regional coverage describe visible effects such as blisters on camels’ feet, watery eyes, and burns or hair loss from hot sand. One herder in Ethiopia’s Afar region reported losing multiple camel calves within a month. The accounts also highlight that heat stress is worsening alongside other pressures, including reduced vegetation, water scarcity, and limited shade.
Camels remain critical to many desert communities for transport and livelihoods, including carrying goods across long distances. As heat intensifies, herders and scientists say the animals’ traditional resilience is being tested in ways that threaten local farming and trade systems.
