New York City police are investigating two separate stabbings near Central Park as a possible hate crime. According to the NYPD and witnesses, the suspect—identified as 51-year-old Raul Morales—allegedly attacked a 57-year-old Asian man by stabbing him in the back with a knife. The suspect later allegedly stabbed a 50-year-old Jewish man in the torso with a screwdriver. Police say witnesses report the attacker yelled “Allahu Akbar” during the attacks. The two incidents reportedly occur a short distance apart in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, in broad daylight. Officials say both victims are expected to survive their injuries. Police commissioner Jessica Tisch and other NYPD representatives state the case is being reviewed under hate-crime criteria, although the motive has not been established publicly beyond the reported remarks. Morales has been arrested and authorities are continuing their investigation, including collecting statements from witnesses and reviewing available evidence.
