A Seoul High Court orders SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won to pay 944 billion won (about US$644 million) to his former wife, Roh Soh-yeong, in a retrial over the division of marital property following their divorce. The ruling comes after the Supreme Court overturned and remanded an earlier appellate decision last year, with the high court issuing the new award during a Friday hearing. Sources describe the case as one of South Korea’s most expensive divorce-related property disputes.
The high court’s decision lowers the amount compared with a prior 1.38 trillion won award issued in 2024, according to reports. The dispute centers in part on whether Chey’s stake in SK Inc., the group’s holding company, counts as marital property subject to division. The court rules that SK Inc. shares owned by Chey are included in the asset division, and that Roh receives one-third of the couple’s property, while Chey retains the remaining two-thirds.
Chey’s lawyers say they will review whether to appeal. The reports also note that the divorce is finalized alongside Chey’s alimony payment of 2 billion won, and that Roh’s representatives did not respond to questions.
