Meta launches “Facebook Verified,” a new free verification badge designed to help Facebook users distinguish real people from bot or AI-generated accounts. The verification process is based on a selfie video: eligible users record a short video selfie, and Meta checks it against existing profile photos to confirm a match. Meta says the steps typically take only a few minutes and are intended to provide a visible signal in places where scams and inauthentic profiles are common, including Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and the user’s profile.
The badge is separate from Meta’s paid Meta Verified subscription and is not offered to Pages or ProMode accounts; it is aimed at personal profiles. To qualify, users must meet Meta’s trust and safety standards, including being in good standing with Community Standards around fraud, scams, and deceptive practices, and Meta states users must be at least 18.
Meta says the badge rolls out in phases starting in select markets, with plans for broader expansion. It also plans to extend where the badge appears over time, including potentially showing it in Feed posts in the future. Meta positions the change as a response to the increasing ease of creating AI-generated accounts.
