Russia launches hundreds of drones at Ukraine, killing at least six, Zelensky says

Russia launched hundreds of drones and nearly two dozen missiles at Ukraine overnight wounding more than 30 people in the cities of Odesa and Dnipro. A Russian drone also hit a Chinese cargo ship in the Black Sea, a day before Russian President Vladmimir Putin is meeting with Xi Jinping in Beijing. KYIV — A wave of almost 600 Ukrainian drones attacked Russia overnight killing four people, authorities said on Sunday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the barrage an “entirely justified” retribution for Moscow’s own pummeling of Ukraine. Air defences shot down 556 drones overnight across the country, Russia’s defence ministry said, with another 30 drones intercepted after dawn in one of the largest Ukrainian barrages of the ongoing conflict so far. In an address on Sunday, May 17, President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Russian forces launched more than 3,170 attack drones, 1,300 guided aerial bombs, and 74 missiles – primarily ballistic – against Ukrainian cities over the past seven days. The relentless multi-vector bombardment targeted residential sectors and civilian infrastructure across the country, resulting in 52 deaths and leaving 346 people injured, including 22 children.

Russia is intensifying its daytime attacks on Ukraine, including on regions sometimes far from the front lines. On Wednesday, Moscow launched at least 800 drones against Ukraine, according to Volodymyr Zelensky.
