God of War Laufey gets Feb. 16, 2027 release date at San Diego Comic-Con

Kratos has been the face of the God of War franchise for decades, but next year, the story is shifting from the Greek god-killer to his wife, Faye. God of War Laufey is the first game in the franchise to not feature Kratos as the protagonist, but beyond that, the game looks like it could hit all the right notes for what fans expect from the franchise with its mix of swords-and-sorcery action, beautiful visuals, and rich storytelling. The release date for the game was officially revealed during San Diego Comic-Con 2026 during the PlayStation games panel. God of War Laufey Platform Unsurprisingly, God of War Laufey is launching as a PS5 exclusive. Recent reports claim that Sony has adjusted its strategy towards PC ports of its games, with its single-player projects being PS5 exclusives. If this is true, then that means that PC players shouldn't expect to see the new God of War game--or other recent releases like Saros and Ghost of Yotei--pop up on that platform a couple of years after launch. Will God of War Laufey have a physical disc release? Amidst Sony's controversial decision to kill PS5 discs, it has been confirmed that God of War Laufey will have a physical release. It'll likely be one of the last major first-party PS5 games to get this treatment, as Sony will officially end disc production starting January 2028. Who is developing God of War Laufey? Sony Santa Monica--the studio behind the previous two God of War games--once again steps into the main-developer role for this new project. Ariel Lawrence is leading the production as the game director, having been with Sony Santa Monica since 2003. Lawrence originally started out as an editor who cut the Tokyo Game Show trailer for the first God of War game, amongst other projects. Rising through the ranks of the studio, Lawrence took a brief hiatus from Sony Santa Monica after a few years of working on 2018's God of War, and later returned to helm God of War Laufey. Like the previous games, God of War Laufey is a third-person action experience built around chaining together various skills and weapons to dish out tremendous amounts of damage. For the new game, Sony Santa Monica said that it was focused on creating a fresh--but familiar--experience for players, with the studio establishing core pillars of fluid combat and plenty of world-building. So far, we've seen Faye combine her magical powers--she was the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, after all--with fast sword combos, courtesy of an enchanted blade that she finds in the afterlife. "By allowing Faye to move easily between ground and air without halting the action, we've refined a hyper-responsiveness to her combat that we can't wait for players to experience when they get their hands on the controller for the first time," Sony Santa Monica said in a PS Blog post. "Her increased mobility adds a ton of offensive and defensive tools to turn battles against even the fiercest gods to her favor." Faye's soul-manipulating magic has also been amplified, and she can hit her enemies hard enough to detach spirits from bodies, knocking enemies down and setting them up for combos. God of War Laufey story Spoiler alert: Faye is already dead in God of War Laufey. Awakening in the afterlife of the gods known as the Everywhen, Faye quickly discovers that the plans she put in place to protect her husband Kratos and her son Atreus are now at risk. With ruthless gods from dangerous pantheons vying for power, Faye has to fight back against their tyranny to save the ones she loves. The first gameplay trailer showed off two of those gods--Sekhmet and Begtse--and the game will examine what happens to a deity after they die. The Everywhen is the key to answering this question, as the location is described as the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns. A realm in which gods and creatures from different mythologies come together, these beings aren't exactly on friendly terms with each other. Considering that Faye was the wife of Kratos, several of the gods murdered by him might also pop up in this transcendent location--and we're betting that they won't be too happy to discover Faye's connection to their murderer. Meet God of War Laufey's stars Faye will be played by Daredevil and True Blood actress Deborah Ann Woll. While certain small corners of the internet--and one pizza brand's social media account--have been whinging about the next God of War game featuring a different protagonist, Woll has wisely decided to ignore the trolls. Faye will be joined by two more characters in her quest: a curious cosmic cube named Phranque, played by The Boys star Jack Quaid--who wore a cube-shaped harness during motion-capture sessions--and Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian voiced by Perlina Lau (Creamerie). Rue is attached to a devastatingly powerful sword, and her role is to keep the weapon out of the wrong hands. What's next for God of War? Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that Kratos will return in a brand-new game set after the events of God of War Laufey, and beyond that, fans of the Greek saga can also look forward to a remake of the original God of War trilogy. A live-action TV series adaptation is also in development, but following a major injury, lead actor Ryan Hurst has had to vacate the role of Kratos. Casting is now underway to find a new actor for the part.
