Residents of Kaiama, Woro, Nuku and nearby communities in Kwara North Senatorial District hold a protest on Friday over the continued captivity of abducted people. The demonstrations follow a deadly attack in February that sources describe as killing scores of residents and abducting about 179 people. According to families and protesters, more than 100 of the abducted victims remain in kidnappers’ hands five months after the attack, with residents saying there has been little progress toward securing their release.
In response, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara backs the protesters and criticizes the state government and Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq. The PDP says the governor’s silence reflects a lack of leadership amid a worsening security situation. Party officials frame protesters’ move to appeal directly to President Bola Tinubu as a “vote of no confidence” in state leadership.
The PDP also argues that national security efforts under the federal government have improved through funding, personnel deployment and military assets, but that it has not been matched by visible action in Kwara. The party urges the governor to engage security agencies more proactively and provide reassurance to victims’ families.
