Work begins on one of the largest modern U.S. infrastructure projects aimed at adding a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River linking Manhattan with New Jersey. Multiple outlets report that large tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) are being assembled for the project in advance of drilling. The planned tunnel is intended to provide additional rail capacity for the region and to create a new underground connection parallel to the existing Hudson River tunnel.
The coverage also places the effort in historical context. When the original Hudson River tunnel connecting Manhattan and New Jersey was built more than a century ago, workers excavated from opposite sides until they met. The current project uses modern mechanized tunnelling methods to reach a similar “meet in the middle” milestone, but with TBMs rather than manual digging.
