Firefighters in southwestern France are battling fast-moving wildfires that force large numbers of residents to evacuate, with displacement reported at over 250,000 people across Europe. In France, authorities describe the blazes as difficult to contain because winds and changing conditions make the fire behavior unpredictable. More than 300,000 people are reported to have fled in France as the fires advance.
To help slow the spread, France deploys a converted Airbus A400M military cargo aircraft for aerial firefighting. The plane performs low passes over fire-threatened woodland and drops a long plume of ochre-coloured flame-retardant material intended to create a barrier and limit how quickly the fires spread. The aircraft is used alongside ground firefighting efforts as crews respond to multiple outbreaks.
Both outlets report that the A400M conversion is a new, heavy-duty tool in the firefighting response, and that the retardant drops are carried out over arid, vulnerable areas while evacuation measures continue.
