Former media aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, says Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi is likely to defect from the party ahead of the 2031 election. Ahmad made the claim in posts on X, arguing that Obi previously changed parties when he believed he could not achieve his political ambitions. He compared the situation to Obi’s earlier move from the Labour Party (LP), which Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on. Ahmad said Obi would “definitely” move to another party in the run-up to 2031, and that he would not remain in a party where he cannot realize his goals.
The reports also note Obi’s recent party switches: he left the LP in December 2025 to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after what was described as a leadership crisis. Later, he moved from the ADC to the NDC, where he became the party’s presidential candidate, with Rabiu Kwankwaso as running mate. The outlets present Ahmad’s comments as a prediction rather than a confirmed plan by Obi.
