19-year-old NEET re-test aspirant dies by suicide in Maharashtra; police investigate

Ahilyanagar: A 19-year-old medical aspirant allegedly died by suicide at her home in Jalalpur village in Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district after failing to secure the qualifying cutoff in the NEET-UG examination, police said.The deceased has been identified as Ankita Suresh Sangale, a resident of Karjat taluka. Police said she allegedly left behind a suicide note, which suggests she was under immense stress over her NEET-UG result.After receiving information about the incident, a team from the Karjat Police Station reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. An accidental death report has been registered, and further investigation is underway.Inspector Hanuman Gaikwad said that the preliminary inquiry and the contents of the note indicate that the student was deeply distressed due to her performance in the entrance examination.Pune: Two Youths Drown Hours Apart In Separate Incidents At Malshej Ghat's Kalu River According to the police, the incident took place on the afternoon of July 25. Ankita was at home with her mother, while her father and brother had travelled to Pandharpur. Her mother later went to check on her at around 4:30 pm and found her unresponsive.Speaking to the media, Ankita's uncle, Anna Sangale, said she had appeared for the NEET-UG examination on May 3 and was initially confident about her performance. However, after the exam was cancelled following the paper leak controversy, she had to appear for the re-examination held on June 21.The National Testing Agency (NTA) declared the NEET-UG retest results on July 16. Ankita scored 166 marks, falling 11 marks short of the qualifying cutoff of 177 for her category. Her uncle said she had been under significant emotional stress since the results were announced.Ankita belonged to a farming family and is survived by her parents and brother. Her last rites were performed on the night of July 25.

Karjat: A 19-year-old NEET aspirant from Maharashtra's Karjat allegedly died by suicide after reportedly struggling to cope with her NEET re-exam result. The incident came to light on Saturday evening in Jalalpur village of Karjat taluka.The deceased has been identified as Ankita Suresh Sangle, a resident of Jalalpur. According to Loksatta, a note recovered from the scene stated that she was deeply distressed after scoring lower than expected in the NEET re-examination.As per the report, Ankita had secured 166 marks in the NEET re-exam held on June 21. In the note, she reportedly wrote that the cut-off was 177 marks, leaving her disappointed that she had missed qualifying. She also expressed that her long-held dream of becoming a doctor had remained unfulfilled."I am depressed because I did not get the expected success in this exam. My dream of becoming a doctor did not come true. None of my parents or brothers should be held responsible for this suicide," the note reportedly stated, according to report.Family Found Her in Her Study RoomAccording to the report, Ankita's father and brother had travelled to Pandharpur for darshan at the time of the incident, while her mother was at home attending to household work. Ankita had been studying in a separate room. When there was no movement or response from her for a long time, her mother opened the door and found her unconscious. The family immediately alerted neighbours and informed the police.Uncle Says She Was Under Mental StressSpeaking to Loksatta, Ankita's uncle, Anna Sangle, said she had been under considerable mental stress after the examination. He said Ankita had appeared for the original NEET UG exam on May 3, in which she had reportedly performed well. However, following the cancellation of the exam and the subsequent re-examination on June 21, she scored 166 marks, falling short of the reported cut-off by 11 marks. "She was deeply upset that she could not qualify and had become depressed," her uncle told the publication.The Unbearable Anxiety Of Being Just An Ordinary HumanPolice Register Accidental DeathKarjat Police have registered the case as an accidental death (ADR) and launched a detailed investigation. Police Inspector Hanuman Gaikwad told Loksatta that, based on the information available so far, the death has been registered due to unknown reasons, and further investigation is underway.
