Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa says Damascus is seeking to reach a security agreement with Israel, speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera. He says the aim is to avoid confrontation while pursuing arrangements that could open the way for comprehensive peace between the two countries. Al-Sharaa adds that any agreement would not compromise Syria’s claim to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which Israel captured during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981. He also says Syria is seeking the participation of several countries in the negotiations, describing this broader involvement as a way to encourage Israel to adopt a more balanced approach toward Syria.
In the same comments, al-Sharaa addresses Syria’s stance toward Lebanon and border security. He rules out military intervention in Lebanon, saying Damascus focuses on supporting the country as it faces its current crisis. He also says Syria has taken precautions against potential threats from armed factions along its border with Iraq.
