Rabi’u Kwankwaso, vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says the North should not always produce Nigeria’s leader. Speaking on an interview programme on News Central Television, Kwankwaso links his position to his decision to run on the NDC ticket with a Southern presidential candidate. He argues that such a pairing reflects the belief in fairness, justice and mutual respect between the North and the South, and he rejects the idea that there is a single expectation from the North that it must rule continuously. Kwankwaso also points to his current political alignment as evidence that the “North must always rule” view is not universal.
The NDC is preparing for the 2027 presidential election, where Kwankwaso serves as running mate to Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate. The reports note that Kwankwaso previously declined an offer to serve as Obi’s running mate ahead of the 2023 election, citing concerns about the prevailing political mood in the North following President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure.
