The Pentagon updates its official war casualty database over the weekend, increasing the recorded number of US personnel harmed in the earlier phase of the US-Iran war, referred to as Operation Epic Fury. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS), the update adds more than 140 wounded service members, bringing the overall casualty count for the conflict phase to more than 600 when including both killed and wounded.
The DCAS update also introduces a new tracking category, “Overseas Operations,” for personnel killed and wounded starting July 7. In addition, the database changes account details for recent losses, including restoring records of four soldiers killed after Iranian strikes noted in reporting days earlier.
Both outlets describe that the figures are contested and that prior reporting had indicated adjustments to the Pentagon’s recorded totals for troops killed and wounded. The changes in categorization and the restoration of some killed personnel contribute to ongoing questions about how transparently the Defense Department updates and accounts for war casualties.
