The United States begins a review of its military presence in Europe, U.S. officials said on Monday, following comments by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to NATO counterparts last month. U.S. Defense Under Secretary Elbridge Colby says the effort is a “real review” aimed at ensuring NATO moves “fast” and in a way that is not reversible toward Europe taking primary responsibility for its conventional defense. Colby adds that the review’s outcome is intended to accelerate NATO’s transition toward an alliance that is stronger and more “equitable” and “sustainable.”
One reported motivation is the U.S. desire for NATO allies in Europe to assume greater responsibility for conventional defense as Washington’s strategic focus shifts toward China. The Economic Times also reports that U.S. officials have previously told European partners that the Pentagon is reducing the number of assets worldwide available for NATO operations. In addition, the reports note that President Donald Trump has criticized European allies over their support during the war in Iran and has threatened to reduce U.S. NATO spending unless allies meet defense spending targets.
