LG Innotek and Japan’s TDK announce a strategic partnership to co-develop next-generation vision and tactile sensing modules for humanoid robots and other physical artificial intelligence (AI) applications, the companies say. Under the collaboration, LG Innotek will apply its optical and ultra-precision module design expertise, while TDK will contribute its sensor technologies. The partners plan to develop vision sensing modules that combine LG Innotek’s vision sensing technology with TDK components including inertial measurement units, position sensors, and microphones. The intended approach is to expand beyond vision-only inputs by also processing motion, orientation, and audio data to improve robots’ recognition capabilities. The companies also plan to jointly develop tactile sensing modules described as enabling a “robot skin” function. LG Innotek states it plans to launch a next-generation vision sensing module equipped with inertial sensors in 2027. The outlets report the collaboration as covering both vision and tactile sensing as part of a broader “physical AI” effort for robots.
