Roberto Mancini is reappointed as head coach of Italy for a second spell, with Claudio Ranieri appointed as technical director, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) says. FIGC president Giovanni Malago confirms the changes, with Mancini returning to the role after previously managing Italy from 2018 to 2023. In his first period as coach, Mancini led Italy to win the 2020 European Championship (held in 2021), including a penalty shootout victory over England at Wembley.
Mancini replaces Gennaro Gattuso, who left the Italy coaching job in April after Italy failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. During the transition period, other officials have also changed. One report says Paolo Maldini has left the role associated with broader oversight, with Ranieri taking responsibility as technical director.
Ranieri’s appointment is described as a shift into a technical oversight role, while Mancini resumes direct responsibility for team coaching. Reports also note Mancini’s most recent coaching work was outside Italy, including a stint leading Qatar.
