Scientists and players’ representatives warn that unusually high temperatures and humidity across the United States, Mexico, and Canada could make some 2026 FIFA World Cup matches dangerous. Using climate risk analysis by World Weather Attribution (WWA) and the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) heat-stress index, researchers estimate that around a quarter of the tournament’s 104 matches could reach at least 26°C WBGT, a level at which FIFPRO recommends cooling breaks. WWA also estimates about five matches may reach 28°C WBGT, a threshold FIFPRO says should trigger postponement or delays. Compared with the 1994 World Cup in the same region, the probability of dangerous heat is reported as nearly doubled.
FIFA says it has prepared heat-management measures, including three-minute hydration breaks in each half, cooling infrastructure for players and fans, adjusted work-rest scheduling, and medical protocols tied to real-time weather monitoring using WBGT and heat index data. Researchers and experts also note that several host cities and venues lack air-conditioned stadiums, meaning risks may extend to fans outside the stadium. Some experts argue FIFA’s measures may not be enough and that reconsideration of the tournament timing could be needed over the longer term.
