The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is proposing a ₹4.16 crore project to replace the escalators at the Grant Road skywalk near Nana Chowk, which have been out of service for nearly three years. The two escalators—connecting the skywalk between the Gamdevi side and Nana Chowk to Grant Road railway station (West)—are reported to be beyond repair, limiting access for daily commuters including senior citizens, schoolchildren, and people with disabilities.
BMC has placed the proposal before the Standing Committee for approval. The project involves installing two new escalators and addressing related damage such as handrails, railings, and collapsible gates. It also includes building protective polycarbonate overhead sheds to shield the equipment from rain and sunlight.
One outlet reports that the municipal commissioner inspected the site in May after receiving repeated complaints and directed officials to restore the facility. The proposal includes awarding the contract to the lowest bidder, with the work described as involving escalators of specified heights, along with a one-year warranty and two years of comprehensive maintenance.
