Iran proposes to Oman a temporary plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to statements by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi carried by state television. Under the proposal, traffic is split so that one direction of shipping would pass through Iranian waters, while part of the traffic in the opposite direction would also take routes through Iranian waters. Gharibabadi says Iran rejects an Omani proposal that would divide transit routes equally between the two countries, arguing that an equal split does not address Iran’s security concerns amid ongoing US-Israeli attacks against Iran. He also links the acceptance of any arrangement to broader regional stability, suggesting Iran is not willing to agree to a temporary transit framework that it views as insufficient for security.
According to the reports, Gharibabadi adds that if Oman does not accept Iran’s proposal, the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed. He further states that Iran has not recognized an alternative route along Oman’s southern coast.
