A court-appointed monitor says California’s largest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center violated a judge’s order requiring adequate medical care for detained people. In a report released Monday, Dr. Muthusamy Anandkumar found that the California City Immigration Processing Center, about 75 miles east of Bakersfield, does not comply with required healthcare standards.
According to the monitor’s findings, the facility has major deficiencies across multiple areas of medical treatment. The report describes gaps in emergency care, delays or failures in providing medications in a timely manner, and inadequate screening for existing or emerging health conditions. It also cites shortcomings in accommodating detained people with disabilities.
The monitor concludes that the problems reflect persistent failures to meet the expectations set by the court order.
