Elon Musk’s xAI has sued Minnesota over a new state law that bans apps and websites that enable “nudification” using AI. Multiple outlets report that the legislation is designed to restrict the creation of nonconsensual, sexually explicit images generated from real people, including deepfakes. The law is set to take effect August 1 and includes significant penalties for developers. xAI argues the statute is overly broad in how it defines “nudification,” contending that it could reach services used for parody, image transformations, or other forms of image editing that might generate nude or near-nude results without the law’s intended focus on nonconsensual intimate imagery.
In the procedural dispute described by NBC News, xAI sought to pause enforcement while the case proceeds, but a judge denied the request. The lawsuit asks a court to block enforcement and, according to several reports, to declare the law unconstitutional due to its scope and application. The challenge therefore centers both on the law’s reach and on whether it can be enforced as scheduled.
