Misir Besra, described by police as a top Maoist leader and wanted in multiple cases, is arrested in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district. Multiple outlets report that the 65-year-old, a resident of Madnadih in Giridih district, is apprehended from the Maniadih area within the Barwadda police station limits on July 28, in a joint police operation. Authorities say Besra carries a reward of more than ₹1 crore and is wanted in connection with Maoist activities, with The Times of India citing charges across 141 cases spanning several Indian states. Alongside Besra, two other Maoists are also arrested during the operation, according to the reports. Separately on the same day, Jharkhand Police record that sixteen Maoists surrender, including individuals described as having substantial rewards on their heads. The reports consistently characterize Besra as a senior figure in the Maoist “red rebel” movement and link his arrest to ongoing efforts to crack down on insurgent networks in eastern India.
