Nigeria’s Federal Government unveils seven herbal medicines developed by the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) for treating and managing several health conditions. Reported conditions include hepatitis B, prostate and colorectal cancers, peptic ulcer disease, hypertension, and high cholesterol. The Federal Government presents the products as part of efforts to promote local pharmaceutical and natural medicine innovation using Nigeria’s indigenous medicinal plants.
The unveiling takes place in Lagos and is led by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Udeh, during a visit to the NNMDA. The minister discusses support for commercialization with pharmaceutical industry leaders and says the government will address challenges such as inadequate funding. He also calls for faster establishment of a proposed Clinical Observational Research Centre to strengthen validation of the medicines.
NNMDA Director-General Prof. Martins Emeje says the new formulations use modern dosage forms such as capsules, tablets, and syrups, and stresses the importance of clinical trials. Named products include Namdavir (hepatitis B), Namdacid (peptic ulcer disease), Turmegol (cancers including colorectal, ovarian, and prostate), and Namdorol (high cholesterol and hypertension). Other listed items include Namgor and Zobo Tea, alongside one additional product whose details are not specified in the reports.
