A chieftain of Nigeria’s Action Peoples Party (APP), Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, praises a Court of Appeal decision affirming the party’s legal status. According to reports, the appellate court delivered a unanimous ruling on Tuesday by a three-member panel led by Justice Abba Mohammed, overturning a Federal High Court judgment dated June 15, 2026.
The Federal High Court case, filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL), sought the deregistration of the APP and other opposition parties. The Court of Appeal holds that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction because the NFFL is not a juristic person and therefore did not have the legal capacity to bring the suit. As a result, the appellate court says there was no competent action before the lower court to support any order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the parties.
Amadi describes the decision as a reinforcement of the rule of law and protection of democratic rights for political parties and citizens. He also says the judgment ends legal uncertainties attributed to attempts by political opponents to undermine opposition groups. The ruling is presented as part of wider appeals involving other opposition parties facing possible deregistration.
