Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleges the Centre uses “strong-arm tactics” and pressures automakers over the compatibility of vehicles with E20 petrol. He says companies are hesitant to make disclosures about risks, and he claims officials have indicated that vehicles manufactured before 2023 could face potential engine damage and performance issues if they use E20. Kejriwal also asserts that automakers may fear agency action for speaking publicly about alleged E20-related problems.
The BJP rejects Kejriwal’s allegations. In response, BJP leaders cite industry statements describing E20 petrol as safe and saying it has been tested and validated comprehensively. BJP officials argue that the automotive sector supports the E20 initiative and dismiss the idea that E20 would harm vehicles.
BJP’s Delhi unit also challenges Kejriwal to substantiate his claims, including by showing evidence of damaged vehicles and providing a mechanism for certification or proof that any damage is attributable to E20. The dispute centers on whether sufficient safety and performance assurances exist for all vehicle categories, particularly older models.
